I'm a free-spirited, kind of hippie, other-culture-loving, Vespa-obsessed mid-twenties girl with a passion for ending global poverty, abolishing sex trafficking, and keeping mamas with their babies. My husband and I strive to advocate for & pursue a slower, more ethical lifestyle, so I created this blog as a place for others who are passionate about world change to connect with Fair Trade artisan women (and men) around the world & help them support their families.

Not everyone is going to agree me on with this... 😬

I know that having extra or flexible income is important, especially in this day and age. I love women starting their own businesses. Women having the opportunity to support their families and be creative. I love handmade jewelry. I admire the women who make it. But every time I see it, I can’t help but think about the women outside the U.S. who are just as talented...but don’t have the same market access we do.

Fair Trade workshops already exist. The infrastructure is there. These women are READY to work. The only thing missing? Enough orders to keep them employed.

But here’s the cool part: If you want to start a jewelry business, you still can! You can partner with these women instead of competing with them. You can sell wholesale Fair Trade pieces or become an affiliate, and make an income while also creating jobs for artisans. And the best part? These pieces aren’t unreasonably priced...they’re beautiful, unique, and fairly made.

I know this is a hot take, and not everyone will agree...but let’s have this conversation.

1. Thrifting is great, but…
– It reduces waste and keeps clothes out of landfills, which I'm here for! 🎉
– But it doesn’t ensure fair wages or ethical labor practices.

2. Why shop Fair Trade?
– Fair Trade brands guarantee fair wages, safe working conditions, and sustainable materials.
– When you buy Fair Trade, you’re actively supporting artisans and workers right now.

3. Thrifting has downsides too...
– Resellers drive up prices in secondhand markets, making clothes less accessible to those who need them.
– Many thrift stores are owned by corporations, not small businesses or ethical initiatives.

4. The best approach? Balance.
-- I prefer to shop smaller stores that are run by local non-profits or ministries.
– I shop secondhand for my wardrobe staples—it’s sustainable and budget-friendly.
– But I mix in Fair Trade accessories to keep my wardrobe feeling fresh and on-trend.
– This way, I get the best of both worlds: reducing waste and supporting artisans.
